Anyone interested in tutoring our children can contact us for more information about our After-School Tutoring Program by calling the office at (540) 432-1812. Children come to tutoring Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. Tutoring requires a regular commitment by the volunteer to come on a set schedule.
If you are interested in volunteering in our After School Tutoring Program, you will need to provide 2 letters of reference and email a letter of interest to Jacob at firstname.lastname@example.org. We ask that you have previous experience working with children.
Mercy House holds community dinners for residents once a month on the 3rd Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Dinners are normally hosted by groups from the community. An average of 75 people come to our dinner. This is a time for families to enjoy a meal together and get to know others who are experiencing similar circumstances of homelessness. Volunteers are asked to provide a well-rounded meal that adheres to the Food Guide Pyramid. Please call (540) 432-1812 to schedule a dinner at Mercy House.
Individuals needing to complete court-ordered community service for non-violent offenses may contact Mercy House to schedule orientation. There are two areas participating in court-ordered community service: the Shelter or the Thrift Store.
Shelter workers may be asked to answer phones, file and complete office tasks, clean offices and apartments, mow the grass or shovel snow or work with the maintenance department on repairs. Please call the Shelter at (540) 432-1812 to discuss and schedule community service. Service hours are from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday through Friday at 305 N High Street.
Thrift Store workers may be asked to help with cleaning and sorting donated clothing and household items at our Thrift Store. Please call the Thrift Store at (540) 433-3272 to discuss and schedule community service. Service hours are assigned after orientation at 1005 N High Street.
