Volunteers

Volunteering
Feeling inspired to make a meaningful contribution to your community? Become a volunteer at Mercy House! We are always looking for individuals to assist with a variety of different programs. Interested college students may obtain a copy of the Fall 2009 student  needs by clicking here.

Adopt an Apartment
Mercy House has 12 efficiency apartments that serve our families.  Organizations, churches and families from the community “adopt” apartments.  These groups keep the apartments stocked with needed household goods:  utensils, dishes, cookware, towels and washcloths, cleaning products, trashcan liners, brooms, mops and bed linens.  Many of these items are kept in stock at the shelter, some can be picked up at the Mercy House Thrift Store and others must be donated.  We currently have three apartments that are not yet adopted.  Please contact Seli at seli@themercyhouse.org if you are interested in this project and would like to adopt an apartment.

After-School Tutoring
College students and other individuals wishing to tutor children can contact Cindy at cindy@themercyhouse.org to sign up for the After-School Tutoring Program.  Children come to tutoring Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm.  Tutoring requires a regular commitment by the volunteer to come on a set schedule.

Community Dinners
Mercy House holds community dinners for residents once a month on a Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
Dinners are normally prepared by college student organizations or other groups from the community. An average of 40-50 people comes to our dinner. This is a time for families to enjoy a meal together and get to know others who are experiencing similar circumstances of homelessness.  Volunteers are asked to provide a well-rounded meal that adheres to the Food Guide Pyramid.  We ask that you prepare at least a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a starch dish.  If you would like to schedule a time to cook dinner for Mercy House residents, please email Laura at laura@themercyhouse.org. For more information about hosting the Community Dinners, click here.

Community Service
Individuals needing to complete court-ordered community service for non-violent offenses may contact Laura at 432-1812 or laura@themercyhouse.org for more information about serving at Mercy House. Workers can answer phones, file and complete office tasks, clean offices and apartments, mow the grass or shovel snow, work with the maintenance department on repairs or help with Angel Food grocery distributions.
