This year, Mercy House has begun three new programs. The immediate goals of the Mercy House staff and board of directors is to define and refine these programs until they operate at the high standards the community has grown to expect from our organization.

Angel Food Ministries (February 2008)
As the economy has spiraled downward and gas prices have soared, many people in our area have requested use of our resident food pantry. As we have shared our food and had conversations with these individuals, we have realized that families have a finite amount of money to spend on groceries and this amount has no longer been able to cover costs for an entire month. The community’s need for a subsidized food program led us to apply to become an Angel Food Ministries host site.

Sandal House (July 2008)
In recent years, there has been a significant growth in the number of homeless teen mothers seeking assistance at Mercy House. Staff quickly learned that methods of assisting adults with families were not the methods that could successfully meet the needs of teen mothers. The board of directors agreed to purchase a separate house for a program for teens having babies. The house was purchased and Wal-Mart Distribution Center managers and associates refurbished the house.

Homeless Intervention Program (August 2008)
Mercy House administers this program for Harrisonburg City and Page and Rockingham Counties. This funding provided by this program is for those who have a history of self-sufficiency, but due to a temporary crisis, find themselves facing homelessness.   With a few months of assistance, these people are able to return to self-sufficiency.
