As memory scans the past, above and beyond all the transitory pleasures of life, there leap forward those supreme hours when you have been enabled to do unnoticed kindnesses to those round about you, which you feel have entered into your eternal life………… these seem to be the things which alone of all one’s life abide. Harry Drummond from The Greatest Thing in the World A call came to the shelter from a woman during the Christmas season. Her family wanted to do something for a family that would make a lasting change in the family’s life. I told her how much we at Mercy House wanted a chapel for our homeless families and how I had tried to talk other groups into taking on the task and been refused time after time. She thought the chapel might be just the project her family needed. First, she came and took pictures, then she brought her husband to look at the little attic room, then her mother came and a brother. Soon the entire family worked on a plan and began their labor of love with a goal of completion by Easter. They worked at night after having worked all day. They worked on weekends after having worked all week. They worked unnoticed. The chapel was completed by Easter. It has a stained glass, an alter table, a book shelf for books and Bibles, a beautifully framed picture of the Head of Christ and 3 pews. The walls are newly painted and the floor newly carpeted. It is a quiet place where families, individuals or a small group can pray and worship or meditate, like a chapel one would find in a nursing home or hospital. It is absolutely beautiful with an undeniable sacredness. Who created this wonderful chapel for homeless families? The chapel is one family’s “supreme hours”. I pray God adds his richest blessings to their labor so that many others are blessed and that God bless this family for their kindness and acts of love. |

We would like to have a compact disc player in the chapel and several discs of soft Christian music that may be inspirational or a comfort to our residents. The resident children need materials such as Christian coloring books, children’s Bible story books, 20 identical children’s illustrated Bibles, Christian videos and some discs or tapes with sing-along Christian songs. The residents would like to read and discuss a devotional book such as The Upper Room. We need 17 subscriptions available to ensure copies for everyone If you would like to make a donation toward any of the above items, your generosity is greatly appreciated. |
