9 Things You Can Do To Help Prevent Homelessness

1.      Volunteer your time and/or talent to help people in crisis.
2.      Invite a Mercy House staff person to be a speaker for your group or organization. For more information, call (540) 432-1812.
3.      Donate to organizations that have a proven record in leading families toward self-sufficiency.
4.      Do not give your money to panhandlers. Connect them to agencies that can help them.
5.      Advocate for fair housing.
6.      Advocate for well-managed housing for low-income families in your community.
7.      Remember:
·        Many homeless families in our area are suffering from the lack of workforce housing.
·        Many homeless families in our area have two parents in the household working.
·        Change is difficult, but possible.
·        Compassion for homeless people is paramount; they, like you, thought homelessness. would never happen to them.
·        Children are the true victims of homelessness.
8.       Know your community’s resources so you can refer people in crisis to appropriate agencies.
9.       Your local Continuum of Care meets the second Thursday of each month at the Lucy Simms Building at 9:00 am. Come see what your community needs and what is being achieved.
